If you are a licensed driver who is moving to New Jersey, you will need to turn in your out-of-state driver license and apply for a New Jersey license. You will also have to get new titles and registration certificates for every vehicle you own that is currently titled and registered in another state or country.
If you move to New Jersey from another state where you were a licensed driver, you will need to purchase an examination permit from a Motor Vehicle Commision (MVC) agency location within 60 days of becoming a New Jersey resident (or before the expiration of your out-of-state license, whichever comes first).
To get the permit, you’ll need to show your current out-of-state license and proof of identity, address, and Social Security number.
Bring your permit to any MVC testing center to take the required tests. Usually that will be a vision test and, in some cases, a written and/or driving test.
Once you pass the required tests, you’ll receive instructions on getting the NJ license. You’ll need to turn in your current license upon receipt of the new one.
Find more details about transferring your license on the MVC’s information page.
For information about transferring to New Jersey from another country, see the MVC’s foreign-specific information page.
